Case study
Creating a unique collection of designs for functions at the legendary Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok
Services
Design and production
Background
Beyond the opulent rooms and world-famous restaurants, the Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, draws much of its revenue from the variety of event and banquet funcitons it offers its clientele. From weddings to corporate events and more, the property and its staff must have a range of services to meet client needs – and fabrics to fit, as well.
What we did
The variety of functions, taking place from day to night, entail that uniforms must compliment the historic charm of the proprety, while also being suitable for any kind of service. To this end, we carefully created looks that matched a variety of event types, various levels of formality, as well as sourcing and selecting fabrics for our designs that would look good in both day and night, in a variety of locations wtihin the property. The care to lighting and color is an often-overlooked aspect of uniform design. Each of the three looks we developed reflects these considerations.
Key details
This jacket's textured gray fabric is more than just "gray". The melange fabric, mixing light and dark tones, help the jackets look light but formal during the day, while the warmer evening lighting of events lend the jackets a richer, fuller color. Beyond the fabric, the jacket is finished with the brand's fan logo embroidery, and a logo-inspired print, custom designed by our team.
Beyond the melange jacket, two more designs were created incorporating a unique jacquard fabric in two tones. On the left, the metallic gold jacquard fabric is offset by the rich black of the collar and center placket. While the jacquard fabrics could become overhwelming in the intricate decor of the hotel, the colors and subtly of the pattern add to the rich environment without distracting.
Our final design for the banqueting team makes use of the same jacquard fabric, but here in a lighter tone, creating a less-formal look. The fabric is used to cut shawl collar, double-breasted vests with the fan logo embroidered on the lapel.
